MOQ and tooling cost: what actually drives the price of a custom bottle

"What is your MOQ?" is the first question almost every buyer asks. The honest answer is that it depends on four things, and three of them are under your control.

What actually sets the minimum

Colour count is usually the biggest driver. Every colour change means purging the machine, and that purge costs the same whether you ordered 500 pieces or 5,000. Four colours across a small order can push the effective minimum up four times over.

Then comes packaging. Custom colour boxes have their own print minimums, often higher than the product minimum. An OPP bag has almost none. Choosing stock packaging for a first order is the single easiest way to bring a minimum down.

Third is decoration set-up — screens and plates are per-colour, per-design costs that do not scale down. Fourth is whether new tooling is involved, which changes the conversation entirely.

When a new mould is worth it

A new mould is a fixed cost paid once. Whether it makes sense is simple arithmetic: divide the tooling cost across your expected first two years of volume and compare that per-piece figure against what you would save by using existing tooling.

For most promotional and first-time retail projects, adapting an existing mould — a new lid, a different capacity, a changed grip, a custom colour — gets 80% of the differentiation at a small fraction of the cost and six weeks less lead time. We will usually suggest this before quoting a new tool.

How to get a smaller first order accepted

Reduce colours to one or two. Take stock packaging. Accept an existing mould with your logo rather than a new structure. Combine several products into one container so the shipment as a whole is worth running.

Say plainly that it is a trial order and tell us the follow-on volume you are planning. A factory will stretch for a 3,000-piece trial that leads somewhere. It is the orders with no second act that get quoted defensively.

What to send us

Target quantity, colour count, packaging preference, destination port and whether you need new tooling. With those five things we can quote properly. Without them, any number we give you is a guess dressed up as a policy.
